ARCHITECTURAL SPACE IN CINEMA – TRANSDISCIPLINARY CLASSES IN ENGLISH
“There is an architectural perspective in movies. Space tells stories. Architecture tells stories in films”.
The statements come from an article entitled “Space as a Film. Architecture in the Perspective of Audiovisual Studies” which explores the links between architecture and cinema. The author shows theoretical concepts regarding this topic and studies the actual effect which the cinematic perception has on the field of modern architecture. Marta Habdas examines such notions as “the narrativity of architecture” using the methodological tools borrowed from the field of film studies. We are going to check if the above statements are relevant in connection with watched films. We will see a lot of similarities between visual perception in analyzing space in architecture and in cinema.
Contenu
We are going to watch a scene or scenes from movies in the original version with no subtitles and we are going to discuss various topics connected with the subject of the films as well as the technical aspects of the movies. Using video excerpts from chosen films, we are going to discuss the following notions: types of shots, frames, composition, editing and montage, transitions and cuts, camera movement, camera angles, film space, filters, light, sound, symbols, motifs, dialogues, plot, special effects, themes, technics, etc.

PROPOSED FILMS
“The Danish Girl” (2015) Tom Hooper
“Seven” (1995) David Fincher
'Rear Window' (1954) Alfred Hitchcock
“Minority Report” (2002) Steven Spielberg
“The Graduate” (1967) Mike Nichols
“Lost in Translation” (2003) Sofia Coppola
“Requiem for a Dream” (2000) Darren Aronofsky
“Shining” (1980) Stanley Kubrick
Mode d'évaluation
To validate the course groups of students (3 students per group) are going to make a short movie (3-4 minutes long) in which the architecture is used to tell a story or/ and it adds a new perspective to it. The final mark is going to be the average between the continuous assessment: oral presentation and oral (or written) class participation -individual (25%), and the short film- group (25%) and a written exam at the end of the semester (50%).
Travaux requis
Two or three students are going to make short presentations on a scene analysis at each class. You are going to choose a scene from a film of your liking and make an oral analysis using the appropriate vocabulary. The purpose of this exercise is to practice speaking (not reading!) in public and sharing your cinematic taste with others. The core of each class is going to be a discussion in connection with movie scenes proposed and analyzed by the teacher and by the students. This is going to help us put in practice the new vocabulary.
